When it comes to popular books of the bible the 12 Minor Prophets aren’t typically at the top of the list. These books are less well known by Christians and excluding Jonah aren’t often taught in churches. We might dip into Joel at Pentecost as God promises to pour out his Spirit on all flesh. We’ll also quote Micah at Christmas as he announces that the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem. Or if we’re being trendy and challenging modern day hype, we might go to Amos as he declares God despises our religious practises when we neglect the greater matters of justice. Though the Minor Prophets are eminently quotable the individual and overall messages are less known. Even if we know the story of Jonah and the whale we might not know the significance of Jonah’s role in the downfall of Israel. Therefore in this 6 week course we will be surveying all twelve books from Hosea to Malachi.

They’re called the Minor Prophets (due to the size of their books) but they are major voices when it comes to understanding the character and nature of God. This diverse group of men were given unique insight into the mind of God that they may see with his eyes, feel with his heart and reach out to the people with his words. During this course we will not only be analysing the content of the books but we will be considering the role of the Prophet as they represent the character and nature of God. Though written over 2,400 years ago they touch upon issues that are surprisingly contemporary and relevant for today. As we explore these rich books we will be asking questions such as “What does this reveal about the character of God?” and “How does God want us to respond to these messages today?” The goal is to not only learn about these books but to grapple with their timeless messages. As we journey through the Minor Prophets our hope is that you might grow in your knowledge of the bible, go deeper in your relationship with God and be equipped to better walk out your faith.

Course Outine

Across 6 weeks we will survey all 12 books of the Minor Prophets. We will begin the course with an introduction to the Minor Prophets where we will highlight their key themes and messages. We will then proceed to go through the books in a mostly chronological order observing the development of their messages in light of the unfolding story of God's people.

Week 1 (01 Oct) - Introduction + Amos

Week 2 (08 Oct) - Hosea & Jonah

Week 3 (15 Oct) - Micah & Habakkuk

Week 4 (22 Oct) - Zephaniah, Nahum & Obadiah

Week 5 (29 Oct) - Haggai & Zechariah

Week 6 (05 Nov) - Joel & Malachi

Course Information

This is a 6 week online course that will take place Wednesday evenings over Zoom. Each night will run from 7-9pm and will be divided into 2 parts with a 10 minute break in between. There will also be an opportunity for Q&A at the end of each evening.
