Overview
Gaps and Challenges Along the Innovation Lifecycle: The Role of Innovation Intermediaries
Speakers: Dr. Guendalina Anzolin, Prof. Eoin O’Sullivan, Dr. Viktória Döme
Chair: Prof. Elvira Uyarra
Abstract:
Over the past decade, the need to sustain technological change has increasingly demanded the collaboration of diverse actors along the innovation and industrial lifecycles. While R&D activities remain central to discussions on innovation, the process itself extends to a wider range of activities that are provided by a different set of organisations. The emerging challenges on the technology side raise questions about the activities that publicly funded organisations undertake to fill the gaps, as well as about a ‘division of labour’ between organisations that act at different stages of the innovation life cycle. The way in which organisations coordinate (or not) provides preliminary evidence on the role they play in their local ecosystem. We will present the results of a comparative project examining the High Value Manufacturing Catapult in the UK and the Manufacturing USA Institute MxD in the US, as well as insights from our work on intermediaries in Singapore.
