About this event

In a shop situated minutes from Jamaica Street and Buchanan Street, the legacy of slavery is clear. We are joined by two fantastic writers who have worked to uncover the histories of slavery and show how entangled the British establishment was in it, as well as recovering the histories of enslaved people themselves.

Malik Al Nasir's new book, Searching for My Slave Roots, covers his research into his family history, uncovering a new history of the transatlantic slave trade reaching throughout the British establishment and stretching from Liverpool to Guyana. Miranda Kaufmann's Heiresses explores the role of women in the slave trade, as owners and exploiters of plantations who turned that wealth into status. Together the two authors will discuss the long shadow of slavery, the role of the establishment in preserving it, and their research into its history, before signing copies of their books.
