Our guest speaker is:

Professor Aftab Ala consultant Hepatologist & Gastroentrologist

Professor Ala is an internationally renowned Consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist specializing in complex liver and gastrointestinal diseases. His clinical and research work is dedicated to advancing the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of liver conditions, with a particular focus on rare liver diseases.

He currently holds positions at King’s College Hospital and Royal Surrey, Guildford, where he delivers expert patient care and leads innovative research initiatives. As the British Liver Association’s Special Interest Group Chair in Rare Liver Disease, Professor Ala plays a pivotal role in shaping national strategies and fostering collaboration in this challenging field.

Academic and Clinical Background

MBBS from Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School (Imperial College), 1992

Specialist training in General Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology at King’s College Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital, London

Advanced Hepatology Fellowship** at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, USA (2003–2004), focusing on rare liver diseases and liver/small bowel transplantation

Sheila Sherlock Travelling Fellowship** at Yale School of Medicine, Centre of Excellence in Wilson Disease (2011)

PhD in Hepatology** from University College London, supported by a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship, with research centered on immune and inflammatory mechanisms linking liver and gut diseases

Research & Clinical Focus

Professor Ala’s research program is dedicated to developing novel diagnostic tools and therapies for liver diseases. His work also emphasizes addressing global health inequalities related to liver health, with a particular interest in rare liver disorders.

His clinical expertise encompasses the management of complex liver conditions, including autoimmune hepatitis, genetic liver disease and liver transplantation.

Publications & Contributions

Professor Ala has published extensively in leading medical journals and is an active contributor to international conferences and guidelines on hepatology and gastroenterology.
