The local authority has a statutory duty to offer all children and young people, who run away or who have been reported as missing, a Return Home Interview.

Whilst missing from home or care, children and young people may experience abuse in any form, use substances or experience poor mental health and these situations could reduce the child’s or young person’s safety. Quite often when children and young people are missing, their education, family and social relationships and life chances can often be hindered.

Missing children and young people are particularly vulnerable to trafficking, violent crime, drug use and exploitation, including sexual exploitation and criminal exploitation.
