Event description

Description

Please join us for this month's mapathon with an evening of humanitarian mapping (and food!). No previous experience required.

On Wednesday 22nd May from 6:30pm-9pm, we will be hosting a Missing Maps event in support of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the Red Cross and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), to help improve maps of vulnerable or disaster affected places. Join us as we help in "Putting the World's Vulnerable People on the Map"!

What is it?

The aim of the Missing Maps Project is to map the most crisis-prone parts of the world. With your time we can directly help humanitarian organisations improve the lives of some of the planet’s most vulnerable people.

Our now monthly event sees around 30 volunteers spare a few hours of their day to support projects ranging from helping end FGM in Tanzania to supporting the Clinton Access Health Initiative elimiate malaria through mapping regions in Zimbabwe and Guatemala. As of December, the Missing Maps Cambridge group has now made over 46,000 additions to the map!

No matter whether you're an experienced Humanitarian Mapper or have never done anything like this before, come along to learn more about OpenStreetMap, GIS and the Missing Maps project.

We will do an introduction on how to map and teach you how to edit OSM and work with the HOT Tasking Manager on mapping tasks.

What do I need?

Just a laptop (you must bring your own with you), a mouse and enthusiasm (mouse isn't absolutely necessary but makes the mapping A LOT faster).

No experience necessary. All tools are free and open source.

Where is it?

This month's venue will be confirmed nearer the date.

We are also grateful to Verisk Cambridge and 1Spatial for supporting the event.

Hope to see you there!
