Event description

Description

Join us this October for an evening of humanitarian mapping (and pizza!). No previous experience required.

This month we are adding a few extras into the mix.

On Tuesday 10th October from 6pm-8:30pm, we will be hosting a Missing Maps event in support of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the Red Cross and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), to help improve maps of vulnerable or disaster affected places.

This month, join us as we team up with the University of Cambridge and The Polar Museum at the Scott Polar Research Institute for an evening of mapping.

As well as the regular mapathon setup, this month shall include:

  • A number of talks including the Canadian Red Cross on the mapping of indigenous communities in northern Canada.
  • Mappers will also get a chance to attend a free after dark tour of The Polar Museum.

What is it?

The aim of the Missing Maps Project is to map the most crisis-prone parts of the world. With your time we can directly help humanitarian organisations improve the lives of some of the planet’s most vulnerable people.

Our now monthly event sees around 40 volunteers spare a few hours of their day to support projects ranging from helping map flood damage in Nepal, to supporting the Clinton Access Health Initiative elimiate malaria through mapping regions in Zimbabwe and Guatemala. As of September, the Missing Maps Cambridge group has now made over 11,000 additions to the map!

No matter whether you're an experienced Humanitarian Mapper or have never done anything like this before, come along to learn more about OpenStreetMap, GIS and the Missing Maps project.

We will do an introduction on how to map and teach you how to edit OSM and work with the HOT Tasking Manager on mapping tasks.

What do I need?

Just a laptop (you must bring your own with you), a mouse and enthusiasm (mouse isn't absolutely necessary but makes the mapping A LOT faster).

No experience necessary. All tools are free and open source.

Where is it?

The October event shall be held at the Scott Polar Research Institute, Lensfield Road, Cambridge CB2 1ER.

We are also grateful to 1Spatial and Mott MacDonald for sponsoring the event.

Hope to see you there!
