Description

A training day for church leaders and linked Social Justice Network event in the evening

“…seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” (Jeremiah 29, verse 7)

While it is an open question whether societal change really is happening more quickly today than it did in the past, it can certainly feel that way. Moreover, we hear so much about how people are drifting further and further away from the Church even if it is clear that the big questions of life and meaning haven’t gone away. But what are some of the changes we are talking about and how does one ‘do mission’ in this context? Moreover, what practices or virtues for those ministering in a rapidly changing climate are likely to lead to flourishing for all God’s people?

Exploring these and other questions, Revd Dr Mike Pears (Director of Urban Life and missions tutor Bristol Baptist Minister) and Dr Andrew Williams (Lecturer in Human Geography and author of Working Faith: Faith-based Organizations and Social Justice, with Paul Cloke and Justin Beaumont) are leading an interactive training day for clergy in Bristol Diocese, drawing on the latest insights from the social sciences and mission thinking. In addition, the day will place particular emphasis on ‘reading’ the contexts in which those attending are working.

The training day will be followed be a linked Social Justice Network event in the evening (6.30-8pm) at the same location with Anna Ruddick.

Dr Anna Ruddick is a community theologian and researcher who facilitates theological reflection and learning for leaders, congregations and Christian organisations seeking to deepen and strengthen their relationships with their local community. Anna currently represents Livability, as Community Engagement Associate, and Urban Life as a Core team member. She is also a Research Fellow at Bristol Baptist College, and a trustee of the William Temple Foundation.
