Event description

Description

Mitigating risk in overseas (research) collaborations

This event is aimed at SOAS employees and/or academics trying to establish (research) collaborations with various foreign institutions or engage with an overseas independent contractor. At the end of the event participants will have a better idea of how an agreement for a research collaboration should be structured, what risk elements surround these type of contracts, how the research office deals with these risks and what you can do to prevent unnecessary delays, costs and frustration.

Objectives:

The presenter will explain what the contractual processes are leading up to the finalisation of the contract, focusing on contracting overseas and highlighting elements of risk such as:

  1. Contract requirements with regards to the law the overseas partner is located at;
  2. Due diligence requirements with regards to the partner;
  3. Applicability of certain VAT regulations on payment (in collaboration with the finance department and human resources);
  4. Other requirements with regard to our SOAS being a public sector institution and maintaining our charitable status.

The presenter will, where possible, use actual SOAS case material.
