About this event
Saffron, the non-profit organisation dedicated to redressing the gender imbalance in the music industry, presents the August instalment of its Mix Nights Online monthly workshop series. The session is open to all women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people who would like to attend. It is hosted on Zoom.

COMMUNITY CLINIC: DJING & PRODUCTION
Our Mix Nights Community Clinics are an online space for women, trans and gender non-conforming DJs to ask questions, share experiences, and build links. If you’re an emerging DJ looking to expand what you do, come along to get input from your peers, share resources and learn something new.
The session will be facilitated by Saffron Mentor and Mix Nights co-creator, Em Williams, who will also be on hand to offer her advice.
The session will start with a check-in, offering everyone the chance to introduce themselves. We will then use the remainder of the session to work through as many discussion points as possible. The theme of this session will be DJing and Production. We’ll be talking about:
- The relationship between these skills
- How they complement each other
- Do you need to do both?
- How to strike a balance / choose a focus
- Any other questions you may have
Want to connect with the community but don’t have a challenge to bring? It can be just as rewarding (and enlightening) to listen to other people’s questions and feed in with your responses. There will also be an opportunity to share social links towards the end of the session so that you can stay in touch afterwards.
About Em Williams
Em is a Bristol-based DJ, producer, and co-founder of the Mix Nights DJ course, alongside Daisy Moon and Danielle. With nearly 20 years of experience, Em’s journey began in the early 2000s, spinning at parties, raves, bars, and clubs across the UK and Europe. She held a residency at Simple, one of the UK’s longest-running club nights and an Oxford institution, sharing stages with some of the most respected DJs in the industry. Known for her immersive, heads-down sets, Em has also been a resident at Field Maneuvers and Gottwood since their inception, where her deep, electronic explorations have become legendary.
In 2018, Em teamed up with her partner Stav to form a collaborative DJ/production project, culminating in their debut EP Afterglow on Midland’s Intergraded label. Continuing to push the boundaries of forward-thinking UK club sounds, the duo launched their label, JoyLift, in 2023 with the release of the Endless EP. Drawing inspiration from Bristol's vibrant music scene and its storied bass culture, EM + STAV deliver a unique take on modernist dance music, blending innovation with the free-spirited energy of their hometown.

GENDER POLICY
The gender imbalance in the music technology industry is well-recognised. While we are absolutely not ‘anti-men’, we see that a shorter-term solution is to provide fellowship and learning environments that are not dominated by the cisgender male perspective. Therefore, these workshops are intended for women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming people to attend. While we do not ban cisgender men from attending, we hope that they will respect that this event is not intended for them.
