Mizuiku Family Workshops - Eco Detectives

ECO DETECTIVES

Come and join us by the banks of the river!

Families with children aged 5-10 years are invited to come along and meet our friendly team at this wonderful location by the banks for the river.

In this two hour ‘Eco Detectives’ workshop you will:

• Be a river scientist, have a go at testing water quality
• Investigate how we can reduce pollution and save precious water
• Try out water marbling art (Suminagashi) to learn what happens when oil spills on water

These events are free of charge to families. However, spaces are limited so if you need to cancel your tickets, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can reallocate your place to another participant.

Workshops are best suited to children 5-10, but younger and older siblings are very welcome to join in.

All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult, who will supervise them closely during activities. Maximum of 4 children per adult.

About Mizuiku

We are delighted to be running these activities free of charge for families thanks to an exciting collaboration with Suntory Beverage & Food Great Britain & Ireland (SBF GB&I) - owner of Lucozade and Ribena. With these workshops we are expanding Suntory’s water education programme in the UK. Known as the ‘Mizuiku’ programme, "mizu" means water, and "iku" means education in Japanese, and reflects the importance of learning about and caring for water. This is the perfect partnership for sharing the message about the importance of water conservation.

About the Venue

Alney Island is a 80-hectare wetland nature reserve located on the banks of the River Severn in Gloucester. It's a haven for wildlife, including various birds, plants, and insects, and is managed by the Gloucester City Council and the Friends of Alney Island. The island is known for its wet grassland ecology and is a great place to observe the Severn Bore.

Access and Safety Information:

Free parking available at Alney Island Car Park, West End Parade, Gloucester GL1 2FA. Paid parking is available at Castle Meads Car Park, Castle Meads Way, Gloucester GL1 2NH.

Good bus links with the 22, 23, 24, 32, 33, 351, 676, 781, 786 and 787 all stopping at West End Parade by the meeting point. Access by bike via Sustrans National Cycle Network Route 45 and there are public footpaths from the city centre.

The nearest train station is Gloucester, in the city centre.

Toilets available? Not on the island but there are nearby businesses.

Other facilities: No café or refreshments available on site. Shops and cafes at Gloucester Quays are approximately 15 minute walk from site.
