ACREW Monaco: Captains' Discussion description

MLC 2 Years On -
It has been two years since the MLC 2006 regulations have been implemented (20th August 2013) and the changes have been substantial for the industry.  These changes have also been mixed and unpredictable in some areas, leading to ships being detained and captains being unsure as to the level of compliance expected.  There are also several key changes about to be implemented that are essential for captains to understand and implement immediately.
The aim of this discussion is to provide up to date information about recent developments pertaining to the MLC regulations, and share best practice in how to comply efficiently and effectively. It will look at the impact the regulations have had, both positive and negative and how to cope with the new changes regarding payment of wages.
The Risk of Migrants in the Mediterranean -
In 2010 9,700 refugee crossings to Europe were documented. This year between January and July alone an estimated 158,832 refugees and migrants crossed the Mediterranean Sea - with an estimated 2,000 losing their lives. The aim of this discussion is to consider the practical preparations and actions you might take in the event you do encounter this situation, not only to save lives but also to protect your crew and vessel.
