Event description
Join us on Monday 24th February to talk about musical theatre craft and audience appeal!

About this Event

When MMD Board Member John visits the UK later in February he has generously agreed to spend an evening with MMD members, sharing his extensive experience and discussing a hot topic for new musical theatre makers.

John was the founder/co-Director of the Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, Inc. (1979-2002) and has been the Founding Director of ANMT/NMI from 2002 to the present. He founded the Writers’ Workshop at Theatre Building Chicago in 1987 and also served TBC as Artistic Director from 1999 through 2009. John has mentored the work of over 250 musical theatre writers.

Craft vs Audience Appeal

Is there a growing sense that audiences may prefer less craft in the shows they attend? In seeking musicals that are relevant to their lives, will audiences accept less craft over more relevance? How can the makers of new musicals ensure audience appeal without sacrificing craft or integrity?

Monday 24th February - 7-9pm

Location: Jerwood Space, 171 Union St, London, SE1 0LN

FREE Entry for MMD members and BML members, £10 for Non-Members

This talk involves the deconstruction of a couple of contemporary shows followed by a group discussion. Please come and join us.
