Managing Menstruation in Extreme Environments Project (MMiEEP)

A project to identify and explore issues around menstruation in extreme/challenging environments, looking at many different aspects including types of environment (such as mountains, deserts, jungle, marine, urban), expedition/travel duration, activities, age, health status, contraception status, cultural background, resources and practicalities in the field, including disposal or waste management.

MMiEEP is a multidisciplinary collaborative project involving academics, explorers, adventurous travellers, remote workers/volunteers, expedition leaders and companies, and travel health practioners. The project will gather experiences from many women, information from many organisa ons such as those running expeditions, field research and volunteering in remote or challenging environments.

The project will include a formal research study of academic standard and we are delighted to have a research internship position funded by the University of Bristol. The study will gather and collate data to build a detailed picture of experience and practice. Data will be analysed and presented in different formats for different audiences including an academic paper, report and short articles. The project aims to produce useful practical information for women and guidance for expedition and fieldwork staff.

MMiEEP will also explore issues related to menstrua on faced by women living in challenging environments around the world, from a variety of different cultures and socie es, including our own. We hope our project will encourage solidarity between women, promote their health and wellbeing, including participation in adventure and outdoor activities.
