About this event

Umembeso bears much spiritual and cultural significance. It symbolises the coming together of both families and is typically characterised by slaughtering animals and the sharing of gifts between the bride and grooms families in a bid to welcome umakoti to the family. Umakoti will be given a new Xhosa family name to signify that she is more than an in-law, but a daughter. This will be further sealed by offering her umbhaco (female Xhosa wear) and female elders of the clan will go and help her change into these to further validate her as being part of the family. The event comes with much activities including dance, singing, ukuyalwa, food and drink.
