About Mock Boardroom

Mock Boardroom is an experiential training workshop developed by the Great Debaters Club and JCI London, a entrepreneurship network for young professionals. Designed to help participants learn how to influence senior decision-makers by engaging with viewpoints that clash with their own, the workshop simulates boardroom discussions, which are chaired by practiced facilitators and observed by experienced business leaders, there to offer feedback and advice.

What you will learn

  • How to 'read the room' and identify the priorities of your colleagues by listening closely to and engaging with their arguments.

  • How to justify a single position from multiple different perspectives to help you appeal to the wide range of priorities held by your colleagues.

  • How to drive a conversation forward by isolating the most important questions at the heart of a discussion and helping the group to agree on a process for answering them.

How it will work

  • Discussions will simulate real-life decisions that almost always need to be made collectively by a group of senior decision-makers e.g. an interview panel deciding who to hire;

  • A brief outlining the scenario will be prepared in advance and submitted to participants to give them time to familiarise themselves with the details they need to know and prepare for the discussion;

  • One person on each table will be responsible for introducing a proposal to get the discussion started - e.g. by delivering a 5 minute opening address on what they want the board to discuss and why;

  • The remaining participants will each be assigned a 'hidden agenda' to defend during the discussion e.g. cutting costs and will have to guess the agenda of their colleagues and attempt to engage with it.

  • A trained facilitator will chair the discussion, helping the group to agree on a set of ground rules, keeping time and order, and offering questions and suggestions to help guide the discussion.

  • The business leader observing the discussion will then offer their feedback and advice at the end and explain which participant they found most persuasive and why.

Who can take part

Opportunities to participate in the discussions are exclusive to members of the Great Debaters Club and JCI London, while facilitators will be handpicked by the organisers based on their experience. There will initially be 8 spots available on this workshop with more likely to be made available closer to the time.
