About this event

How did our ancestors bury their dead, and who were these remarkable individuals?

Join us for a unique educational experience, guided by a renowned bone specialist from Bournemouth University, as we delve into the fascinating world of forensic anthropology. In this immersive workshop, participants will engage in the meticulous excavation of a replica skeleton, employing essential forensic techniques to identify various bones and piece together the enigmatic story of a 4,000-year-old cold case.

Excavating alongside other junior archaeologists, you will learn to identify the different bones in the human body and recognise distinct skeletal features that reveal secrets about the individual's life. With expert guidance, you'll explore the fundamentals of estimating sex and age from skeletal remains, unlocking clues about the person's gender and how their age influenced their daily existence. As you meticulously analyse the bones, consider what they might tell us about the individual's lifestyle. Was this person a hardy farmer toiling the land or perhaps a valiant warrior whose life was marked by battles and bravery? Each bone has a narrative to share, whispering tales of the past that can reshape our understanding of ancient lives.

This educational event is tailored for those aged 12 and above, inviting young explorers and curious minds alike to embark on a journey back in time. With the wisdom of our expert at your side, you'll not only refine your bone identification skills but also develop a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of human history. Prepare to unlock the mysteries of the past and walk in the footsteps of those who came before us in this unforgettable adventure into the depths of archaeology and anthropology.

All materials and tools will be provided. The activity will take place outside in sandboxes, so please wear suitable clothing and footwear.
