Master the secrets of modern gilding

In this evening workshop you will discover the techniques and equipment to enhance any item in your home; furniture, decor, art, or walls and ceilings, with Ian Newman, Decorative Artist, Gilder and Restorer B.A., M.A.

Ian has worked on projects in stately homes as well as on many private commissions, (both large and small!). Over a number of years Ian has restored and transformed many treasured frames and artifacts for clients and customers using non-intrusive techniques as much as a possible, to maintain the integrity of the item. Working with Interior designers and their clients.

This is an introduction to a technique of modern gilding using 'imitation' metal leaf and acrylic adhesive. This method is based on the traditional technique of oil gilding.

What you will take away with you

An understanding of the differerence between pure leaf gold and imitation metal leaf, and the differences between loose leaf and transfer leaf

Understanding of the correct use of the tools and equipment.

How to handle, cut and apply the metal leaf

How to prepare a surface ready for gilding, the products and materials to use and the importance of this partof the process

How to apply the adhesive correctly

How to apply the metal leaf to your artifact/object/furniture

How to apply a patina, aged or distressed effect, and a protective layer to finish.

For those with little or no experience

The day

  • Arrive for prompt start at 6.00
  • Ian will share his experience on using many different types of metals, coppers and gold leaf mediums and the properties they each offer.
  • You will be shown how to evaluate the surface preparation required.
  • Create your own unique style design with Dutch metal in copper, gold or silver.
  • A frame will be provided for you already prepared for gilding.
  • Ian will talk through the preparation process and you will recieve an information sheet which includes a list of suppliers.

All tools, equipment and materials will be provided and are included in the workshop fees. Refreshments are provided (please bring your own dietary requirements)

This workshop is set in the warm, friendly and picturesque surroundings of Sandydown, Stockbridge located in the heart of Test Valley.

We keep our groups to a small number to ensure you receive one to one instruction for much of the time.

Workshops are limited to five spaces only, book early to avoid disappointment.
