What will this course cover?
In this course we will be discussing texts written in English by Irish writers during a period of great social, economic and political change.
Together, we will be discussing a range of poems by authors including Eavan Boland and Colette Bryce, extracts from Brian Friel's drama Dancing at Lughnasa, and also from the novels, The Spinning Heart, Milkman and Small Things Like These.
We will be exploring the themes the writers develop, and asking searching questions about the texts. What is each author’s intention? What is influencing the author’s writing, and what assertions are they making in each text? What choices do the authors make in terms of style to reflect the context, ideas and emotional life of their writing? What is distinctive about Irish writing from this period?
Through our discussions together, we will be seeking answers.
