Event description

Description

Modul:Projects and Brighter Sound present Modul:Meets, a series of free sessions for anyone interested in electronic music performance, composition and production.

Each Modul:Meets session will feature a different artist working at the forefront of electronic music, who will give an insight into their live performance and recording methods, as well as tips and advice for your own work.

Sam Weaver - 12 July

First up is composer and sound artist Sam Weaver, who uses his studio as a laboratory for sonic investigation and production, re-routing instruments into abstraction and deliberately misusing his equipment. Sam's work exists between acousmatic music, free improvisation and experimental electronics, seeking to explore dynamics of sonic harmony and chaos. He is one half of London outfit Hungryghost, and has recorded and performed with Charles Hayward, Danny Saul, Ecka Mordecai, Otto Wilberg, Rachel Goodyear, Konstrukt, Tombed Visions, Gnod and Kevin Drumm. Alongside this he also finds time to curate and run Cusp Editions, an imprint that champions new sonic territories in electronics, improvisation and beyond.

He will be performing with his Hordjik analogue modular synthesizer and taking you through his processes to demystify the often esoteric world of modular synthesis. Don’t miss this one-off opportunity to meet and chat to one of the best modular experts in the game.

CHAINES - 19 July

CHAINES, born Caroline Haines is a musician based in Manchester, UK, who writes rather peculiar electronica and electro-acoustic music. More recently, they have had their music toured by producer and cellist Oliver Coates (PRAH Recordings) across Europe and America, and large scale electro-acoustic premières given by the London Contemporary Orchestra (Decca, Universal, various) and organist James McVinnie (Bedroom Community) in venues such as The Roundhouse and The Royal Albert Hall. They have been in residency with SAY award winner Anna Meredith and Grammy Award winner Imogen Heap, improvising, performing and producing audio and video.

CHAINES has had their music broadcast on BBC Radio a number of times, including a live performance at Manchester's Islington Mill on BBC Radio 3's Exposure, and on Laura Barton’s 'Notes From a Musical Island' (BBC Radio 4), featured in The Guardian. CHAINES' third record and first full length album 'The King' is due to be released later on this year. They graduated The Royal Northern College of Music in 2013 with a 1st class honours in Composition and Contemporary Music.

Caroline will be showing how they have taken their home compositional techniques into the live setting in a unique one off performance and workshop.

Modul:Projects is a collective of electronic musicians and artists. They explore methods for collaboration within electronic and experimental music through unique artistic residencies and events, focusing on pioneering innovative methods of electronic composition and non-traditional live performance.

Modul:Meets sessions are open to all ages and are free but must be booked online in advance.

AFRODEUTSCHE - 26 July

AFRODEUTSCHE, born Henrietta Smith-Rolla is a British born Ghanaian/Russian/German composer, producer, singer and DJ based in Manchester. Her production crosses a wide range of styles, from classical solo piano to techno, house and electro. She recently composed a section of the film Baraka and performed live at the RNCM as part of Video Jam.

As well as her solo work, Henrietta has performed as part of Sisters of Transistors, a 5-piece Synth and Electronic band, and with The Part Time Heliocentric Cosmo Drama After School Club, an Eclectica big band curated by Paddy Steer (Homelife) & Graham Massey (808 State/Massonix).

Henrietta will taking us inside her unique compositional process to show us how she works both in the studio and in a live setting.
