Event description
“Mona Lisa and the Flying Machine” - linking Art, Science and Technology. A talk by Martin Kemp, world leading expert on Leonardo da Vinci.

About this Event

2019 represents 500 years since the death of Leonardo da Vinci. Martin Kemp, Emeritus Professor in the History of Art at Trinity College, Oxford University is considered one of the world's leading experts on the art of Leonardo da Vinci and has published and broadcast extensively on Leonardo da Vinci and visualisation in art and science.

To commemorate the quincentenary of Leonardo’s death and to highlight the links between Art, Science and Technology, Martin will be visiting Wrexham Glyndŵr University to talk about “Mona Lisa and the Flying Machine”.

We see painting a portrait and building a flying machine as two different activities. For Leonardo they were key parts of an integrated enterprise to understand the workings of nature so well that he could act (as he said) “like a second nature in the world”. At the end of the talk a recording of “Shaping the Invisible”, sung by I Fagiolini, composed by Adrian Williams to words by the Welsh poet, Gillian Clarke, which centres on the bat as a model for the flying machine will be played.

Mae 2019 yn cynrychioli 500 mlynedd ers marwolaeth Leonardo da Vinci. Mae Martin Kemp, Athro Emeritws mewn Hanes Celf yng Ngholeg y Drindod, Prifysgol Rhydychen yn cael ei ystyried yn un o brif arbenigwyr y byd ar gelf Leonardo da Vinci ac mae wedi cyhoeddi a darlledu'n helaeth ar Leonardo da Vinci a delweddu mewn celf a gwyddoniaeth.

I goffáu pumcanmlwyddiant marwolaeth Leonardo, ac i ddynu sylw at y cysylltiadau rhwng Celf, Gwyddoniaeth a Thechnoloeg, bydd Martin yn ymweld â Phrifysgol Glyndŵr yn Wrecsam i siarad am "Mona Lisa a'r Peiriant Hedfan".

Gwelwn beintio portread ac adeiladu peiriant hedfan fel dau weithgaredd gwahanol. I Leonardo roeddent yn rhannau allweddol o fenter integredig er mwyn deall sut mae natur yn gweithio mor dda fel y gallai weithredu (fel y dywedodd) "fel ail natur yn y byd". Ar ddiwedd y sgwrs bydd recordiad o "Llunio'r Anweledig", a gaiff ei ganu gan I Fagiolini, a gyfansoddwyd gan Adrian Williams i eiriau gan y bardd o Gymru, Gillian Clarke, sy'n canolbwyntio ar yr ystlum fel model ar gyfer y peiriant hedfan yn cael ei chwarae.
