Event description

Description

Annual Conference 2017 - The Labour Party

Financial capability levels in the UK are stubbornly low, four in ten adults are not in control of their finances, one in five cannot read a bank statement and four in ten have less than £500 in savings. This means that millions of people across the nation lack the resilience to deal with unexpected financial shocks and are at risk of failing into financial difficulties.

When people are experiencing mental health difficulties, dealing with their money well can become even more challenging, and too often money problems and mental health problems can go hand in hand. A Money and Mental Health Policy Institute Survey found that 72% of respondents said that their mental health issues made their financial situation worse, 93% say they spend more when they are unwell, 92% find it harder to make financial decisions, and 59% have taken out a loan that they would not otherwise have done. The majority of clients who have received debt advice from Money Advice Service (MAS) partners - 52% - also have a diagnosed mental health condition.

Join us at this New Statesman and MAS panel discussion to explore ways in which local government, local services and local employers can work together with people experiencing mental health problems to help them avoid financial difficulty.
