Event Details

With Mike Elliston (dramaturg/writing coach)

Geraldine Brennan (facilitator)

Actor/writers create a monologue well on the way to performance standard in two days, build up the discipline, skills and confidence they need to continue writing for performance and share their new work with an invited audience right away in an evening celebration.

By writing in short intense bursts, sharing their progress in a small, friendly group (maximum 10 participants) and with individually tailored support from playwright/tutor Mike Elliston, they will build on a pre-researched idea through several drafts.

On the afternoon of Day 2 they will share their new pieces with the group and receive feedback.

On the evening of Day 2 they will share their new work with an invited audience, in a script-in-hand performance to consolidate the weekend’s achievement, as part of the salon:solo, a celebration of new writing.

Preparation

This is not a course for finding inspiration. Participants must enter the process with an idea for a monologue and having done enough background research to give them a hook into their idea. We ask for ideas to be submitted three weeks in advance we can feed back in time for everyone to come prepared to get the most out of the workshop.

Process

A lot of time will be spent writing independently and revising work in shared spaces. Participants might want to bring headphones so they can block out noise or listen to music as they prefer. They will also need a laptop or tablet plus charger as we will print out texts for sharing.

Approximate schedule

Day 1 (Saturday September 16)

Participants distil their idea into a two-minute intro or pitch, develop it in two intensive writing sessions, share their draft with the group and get feedback in a supportive atmosphere. There'll be lots of individual attention.

Day 2 (Sunday September 17)

Redrafting with support from Mike and Geraldine, getting ready to lift the pieces off the page in a performance for the group. After a break, at 7.30pm our writers will read their new work to an invited audience at salon:solo. Other salon artists will be taking part and everyone will be encouraged to invite friends and contacts. We'll be above a friendly pub where we can all finish the evening.

Booking policy and Code of Conduct for salon:collective courses:

Places are non-transferable. Refunds will only be possible if the course sells out and we are able to re-sell your place. Should you need to request a refund, please do so via eventbrite. Your place will then be released to the next person on the waiting list. If sold, your refund will be approved.

Similarly, if you want to book but find the workshop is full, use the waiting list system and you'll be informed if a place becomes available and be given a deadline by which you need to book and pay.

Please attend the whole course and be punctual. We won't be able to repeat material that you've missed and we want everyone to be able to focus on their writing without interruptions.

Code of Conduct :

We have a zero tolerance policy for behaviour that places yourself, others or the teaching environment at risk. Any damage caused will be paid for by the course participant.

Our zero tolerance policy extends to the use of illegal drugs. Also, if you consume alcohol prior to a class you will be excluded.

Participants must be able to write in English and speak English at a conversational level.

We may, on rare occasions, be required to reschedule classes or the advertised teacher.  If this occurs as much notice as possible will be given but students will be required to make every effort to accommodate a new class schedule.

Anyone breaking any of these rules and/or considered detrimental to learning will be removed from a course without refund of any kind.

Communication policy:
We may use your personal data to communicate with you about the course(s) you have signed-up to. We will also add your details to our separate marketing database from which you may unsubscribe at any time.
