Event description
Learn and explore the basics of monoprinting on this evening taster session.

About this event

Monoprint uses a plate and stencil process and multiple layers of oil-based ink to make unique prints. Start out with simple shapes and block colours and build up into complex designs, textures and shades. Monoprint is a great first introduction into printmaking – you’ll learn about inks and paper, and use an etching press.

What experience do I need?

This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners as well as those with more experience. People with an established artistic practice will find they get a lot of new ideas from the unexpected designs they produce. Those who aren’t that confident about their drawing and imagery will also get a lot out of monoprint – simple shapes and an open mind will get you a long way with this process!

What will I make?

Previous students have made between 20 and 30 prints in a session – this is a fast, fun and experimental process! You’ll end up with a portfolio of colourful, layered prints on different papers.

Who is my tutor?

Joanna Wilkinson is a practising printmaker, illustrator and bookbinder. She uses printing, collage, analogue/slow photography and sometimes even old style colouring techniques like felt tips in her work! Joanna has recently completed an MA Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University and is also a Co-operative Member of Leeds Print Workshop. She has been working with us over the last two years as a technician and tutor. She has experience in teaching a wide variety of different groups of people including children and adults.

Do I need to bring anything?

All the materials, tools and equipment will be provided. This will include inks and rollers, plastic monoprint plates, and papers to print on. Students can bring sketchbooks, shapes, patterns or other images for inspiration, but this is not necessary – simple abstract shapes work well for monoprint, and you can come up with ideas in the class. You may wish to bring a portfolio folder along to carry your prints home. We also sell A3 portfolio folders for just £3 if you wish to buy one from us.

Covid Safety

Please visit our website here for further information on our current Covid-19 measures.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will refund you if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the first session of the course, after this time no refunds will be issued. Please note Eventbrite’s booking fee is non refundable. By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website here.

What if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings or if lockdown measures are put back in place). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and disabled toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one dedicated disabled car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street.

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
