Learn and explore the basics of monoprinting on this one day workshop. Monoprint uses a plate and stencil process and multiple layers of oil-based ink to make unique prints. Start out with simple shapes and block colours and build up into complex designs, textures and shades.
What experience do I need?
The course is suitable for absolute beginners. Monoprint is a great first foray into printmaking – you’ll learn about inks, paper and use an etching press.
People with an established artistic practice will find they get a lot of new ideas from the unexpected designs they produce. Those who aren’t that confident about their drawing and imagery will also get a lot out of monoprint – simple shapes and an open mind will get you a long way with this process!
What will I make?
Previous students have made between 20 and 50 prints in a session – this is a fast, fun and experimental process! You’ll end up with a portfolio of colourful, layered prints on different papers.
Who is my tutor?
Mick Welbourn is currently the manager of the printmaking workshops of Leeds College of Art, where he has worked for more than twenty years. Mick was a participant in the Jerwood Drawing Prize exhibition in 2011. In 2013 he finished his MFA at Leeds University where he was the recipient of the Wilhelmina Barnes Graham Printmaking Scholarship. Mick is one of the founding committee members of Leeds Print Workshop, and is excited to create a space for art alumni across Leeds to make work after graduation.
Do I need to bring anything?
All the inks, papers, tools and equipment needed to make monoprints will be provided by Leeds Print Workshop. This will include relief inks and rollers, plastic monoprint plates, and paper to print on. We will provide aprons, but you can bring your own if you like!
Students can bring sketchbooks, shapes, patterns or other images for inspiration, but this is not necessary – simple abstract shapes work well for monoprint, and you can come up with ideas on the day of the workshop.
If I can't attend can I get a refund?
We will refund you in full if you cancel no later than 7 days before the workshop. For cancellations after this period there will be no refunds issued.
