Event description

Description

Learn and explore the basics of monoprinting on this one day workshop. Monoprint uses a plate and stencil process and multiple layers of oil-based ink to make unique prints. Start out with simple shapes and block colours and build up into complex designs, textures and shades. Monoprint is a great first introduction into printmaking – you’ll learn about inks and paper, and use an etching press.

What experience do I need?

The course is suitable for absolute beginners as well as those with more experience. People with an established artistic practice will find they get a lot of new ideas from the unexpected designs they produce. Those who aren’t that confident about their drawing and imagery will also get a lot out of monoprint – simple shapes and an open mind will get you a long way with this process!

What I you make?

Previous students have made between 20 and 40 prints in a session – this is a fast, fun and experimental process! You’ll end up with a portfolio of colourful, layered prints on different papers.

Who is my tutor?

Kirstie Williams is a founding member of Leeds Print Workshop. She is a practising designer and printmaker creating both textile and paper based work.
She studied MA Textile Design at Chelsea College of Art in 2010 and completed a PGCE teaching qualification at the University of Huddersfield in 2014. Kirstie previously worked as an Associate Lecturer for Short Courses at Leeds College of Art, primarily teaching in adult education. She is passionate about bringing together a new creative community in Leeds through the running and development of Leeds Print Workshop.

Do I need to bring anything?

All the inks, papers, tools and equipment needed to make monoprints will be provided by Leeds Print Workshop. This will include relief inks and rollers, plastic monoprint plates, and paper to print on.
Students can bring sketchbooks, shapes, patterns or other images for inspiration, but this is not necessary – simple abstract shapes work well for monoprint, and you can come up with ideas on the day of the workshop.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will refund you in full if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the first session of the course, after which no refunds will be issued. Once booked, you cannot transfer to another course.

What if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible but, due to the nature of the building, Leeds Print Workshop is not wheelchair accessible. There is a step up into the building and four steps down to the toilets, and no accessible toilet facilities. Should you have any questions, or wish to discuss accessibility before booking, please don't hesitate to email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
