New York’s students of fashion are lucky.
The city is full with textiles vendors for quick fashion but also for do-it-yourselves designers and theatre costume makers. In the bustling Midtown garment center, adorned with a famous Oldenburg sculpture of a needle and button, the streets of textile houses are dense with people, racks, stacks, boxes and vendors. The smell of foods is overwhelming, the stank from the underground oppressive, the sound of traffic nerve wracking.
When the students have managed to traverse this hellish experience they go up one flight and arrive in creative heaven, Mood’s textile center, the most adventurous of all textile experts, the epicenter of fashion design. Partners in the famous Project Runway reality TV series the store has acquired international fame. Sharpened by the constant requests of the multicultural student body the buyers focus on the newest qualities, the best textures, the noblest of fibers and diverse exciting materials such as neoprene, fake furs and coated qualities.
A visit to the store is therefore like a trend trip, a way to discern coming waves of colors and textile designs,an accumulation of the newest qualities to reach maturity, a true inspiring indicator of fashions to come.
The NYTM is celebrating the Mood matter with a day of mood board making lessons in at Mood U School at Mood Fabrics. Teaching amateurs, artisans and students the skills of trend board making; how to discern trends, how to feel color, how to interpret signs of the times. The selection of fabrics will have central focus.
