Join the academics and students of the School of Physical Sciences for an evening of Moon exploration and learn about the most recent news from our nearest neighbour in space!

The event will open at 17:00 with a brief presentation by Dr Mahesh Anand, Reader in Planetary Science and Exploration, who will introduce the Moon from a scientific perspective. He will also be speaking live to a current member of the NASA team working towards a modern day return to the Moon.

From 17:30 to 19:30 you will have the opportunity to get hands on with a variety of activities related to the Moon and speak with staff and students who explore the Moon. Everybody is welcome at this free public event which is suitable for all ages, especially 11 - 16 year olds.This will include:

  • View images of the Moon and learn about the Apollo and Luna landing sites
  • Experience a live view of the Moon using the onsite George Abell Observatory (weather permitting)
  • Explore the work of the Apollo missions through audio and video clips
  • Get hands-on with samples of meteorites, and see Moon rocks with the OU's Virtual Microscope
  • Learn how 3D printing will be used to build human settlements on the Moon in the future
  • Travel to the Moon in the inflatable planetarium
  • Investigate the differences and similarities in the internal structures of Moon and Earth rocks in a 3D digital environment

The event will then conclude (19:30 - 20:00) with a presentation giving an overview of how the OU team is involved in past, current and future space missions.

FAQs

Is there an age restriction on the event?

Everyone is welcome to attend this event regardless of age, however please be aware that all under 18 year olds must be accompanied by an adult and will be the responsibility of that adult throughout the event.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

By Car: The campus postcode is MK7 6AA and there is lots of free parking available on campus with disabled parking available immediately outside the event venue.

By Bus: Service 11/11a and 12/12a (Z & S Transport), Service 70 (Arriva), Service 15 (Vale Travel) public buses run frequently from the train station through various suburbs of Milton Keynes and to The Open University.

By Train: The campus is 4 miles from Milton Keynes Central railway station, served by the West Coast Main Line between Birmingham and London (Euston). Taxis can always be found outside the MK Central Station. The Open University is five to ten minutes drive from the Station.

When you arrive: OU Go is a 3D map guide for the Milton Keynes campus that you can download onto your mobile phone - the event is taking place in the Berrill Building.
