Moonwrite Special Edition - Lunar Lanterns

Moonwrite Special Edition - Lunar Lanterns

By The Writers Workshop

Overview

A glorious afternoon of making and writing inspired by the full moon and culminating in a shared meal.

Every living being since the dawn of time has gazed up at the same moon.

A moon which inspired mythology, literature, philosophy, science; a moon that directs migrations, tides, the movement of leaves and perhaps even the blood in your veins. You will be hard pressed to find an artist untouched by the moon.

December’s Moonwrite will be a little different.

I am teaming up with land artist Jo Veal and musician Kate Thomas to bring you a glorious afternoon of making, writing, music and delicious food. We will gather at Abbeyfield House - a grand 19th Century building now used as a community and social justice space - where, alongside the usual mix of folklore, history and poetry to inspire your writing: we will make our very own Lunar Lanterns to bring home.

Winter Solstice, the longest night, is after all just around the corner.

And as if this isn't exciting enough, we will be accompanied by the meditative sounds of live handpan playing. Before ending the afternoon with a shared meal as the dark sets in, warmed by words and lit by lanterns.

Twelve Moons, for some of us twelve moonwrites together, the last full moon of the year and a supermoon at that, there is so much to celebrate! And if you are new, we are a welcoming group writing and dreaming inspired by each full moon.

Do wear sturdy boots for foraging, dress for the weather, and bring a notebook and pen! There will be hot drinks and snacks in the kitchen throughout, and we will end with a large pot of home-made vegetarian stew, mormor's rolls (my grandmother's recipe), fresh salads and something sweet (gluten free and/or vegan options available).

Will you join us for the December Moon – also known as the Little Spirit Moon, Long Night Moon, Moon of the Popping Trees – who will this moon be to you?

Suitable for every level of writing and making, whether you’re a dedicated moon-worshipper or someone who enjoys the simple awe of looking up into a night sky and finding light.
