Moor Meadows Plug Planting workshop
Overview
Growing wildflower plug plants for a meadow offers instant, reliable results with high survival rates. These established young plants have strong root systems, allowing them to quickly fill gaps. They also make it easy to introduce certain species that are difficult to establish direct from seed, helping you diversity the plants in your meadow.
The workshop is being led by experienced wildflower plug grower Tyler Haddad, at her nursery in Gidleigh, near Chagford.
You will learn about:
- growing your own wildflowers from locally harvested seed
- local meadow ecologies, the plant species through ID, plant cycle and plant families
- seed harvesting, processing and storage
- sowing wildflower seeds and other propagation techniques
- watering, infrastructure and ongoing management
- planting out plugs in meadows and even garden borders or containers
Plugs and plants grown by Tyler will be available for sale on the day.
The workshop will be held outdoors and is weather-dependent, so we may need to postpone if conditions aren’t suitable. Numbers will be limited so book now if you’d like to come.
Booking: £12
Tyler Haddad:
Tyler has been an avid grower and land worker for many years and the last three her focus has shifted towards wildflowers. After encountering challenges in growing them from seed, and finding little practical guidance online or in books, she discovered that the Working with Wetlands team at Devon Wildlife Trust were doing exactly this - just 15 minutes from her home.
Over the next two years, as a volunteer, she helped increase the organisation’s growing capacity and develop systems for sowing, managing, and planting out plugs. She regularly visited nature reserves and SSSIs to collect seed throughout the year, and led the first major planting of 3,800 plugs on culm grassland with DWT.
Tyler also built a low-tech polytunnel in a local private garden and experimented with a range of propagation methods, watering systems, and planting techniques. She is now setting up a small nursery at her home. Through these experiences and hands-on experimentation, she has become a passionate amateur, excited to share what she has learned.
