More Maugham! Play reading: Sheppey by Somerset Maugham
By Canterbury Commemoration Society
Overview
An open public reading of Somerset Maugham’s final play.
Dedicated to Sir John Gielgud and starring Ralph Richardson when it first opened, Maugham’s startling drama examines the effect of a considerable lottery win on Joseph Miller, a hairdresser on the Isle of Sheppey. The final scene, unlike anything else Maugham wrote, resonates powerfully with storytellers ancient and contemporary.
The reading is another exciting opportunity further to explore Canterbury’s rich dramatic heritage.
