Event Details

Due to high demand for tickets we have moved this lecture to a bigger venue in Cardiff University's Glamorgan Building, on King Edward VII Avenue.

What links the news and information we consume online, the Brexit referendum, Donald Trump’s shock election win, and secretive elite manipulation of the political process?

Adam Ramsay is one of a small but tenacious international group of investigative journalists uncovering how “dark money” – cash channelled to disguise its origin – was a key funding stream used by shadowy international political and business elites to influence digital news coverage, and targeted social media advertising, about recent elections and referendums worldwide.

Along with his colleague Peter Geoghegan he has done ground-breaking work, reported on globally from the Times to the New York Times, following the money which funded the conservative think tanks, shady front groups, targeted Facebook ads, and biased news stories, which combined to form a powerful right-wing pro-Brexit campaign.

Adam Ramsay is the editor of openDemocracyUK, and a freelance journalist who has published widely on topics such as politics, the environment, and Scottish independence, for outlets such as the Guardian, the Independent, Vice, Red Pepper, and Novara Media.
