Event description
This is a 3 hr pottery session aimed at primary children.

About this Event

This session is suitable for children aged 6-12yrs and they can be left for the session.

The morning session is a short introduction to pottery for children. The children will start at 9:00 with a general introduction to clay. Clay is the perfect medium for downtime, just pure creative engagement with the clay, a material that is relaxing and very versatile.

We'll show the children some simple techniques and then just encourage them to enjoy the clay. When you're engaged in artistic pursuits you get the bonus of contemplation time - it just happens! Children lose themselves in this activity.

There will be several techniques taught such as pinching, coiling, slab work, joining and markmaking on clay as well as plenty of time for the children to 'freestyle' and play. All of the pottery will be made from airdry clay and everything the children have made will be taken home with the children at the end of the session. There will be no firing at the moment, we have specifically chosen to use air dry materials so that the children can take their pottery home on the day. This clay can be dried at home and painted with acrylic and varnished with a coat of pva glue if you wish to do so once it is dry.

We have taken extra precautions to make sure that the children will have all of their materials packed into their own resources box ahead of the session. Inside the box will be all of the tools, and materials that they will need for the morning. They will not be sharing any materials with the others in the group and all of the children will be seated at spaced distance from one another. We will be taking precautions according to government guidlines at the time of the session.

Drinks and fruit snack will be included for all children and there will be also be opportunity for the children to stretch their legs and get some fresh air outside for a short break half way through the session.

During the morning the children will be taught by Sara Calgie, a qualified and experienced primary teacher and specialist arts educator. The groups will be taught with a small group ratio of 1:10 teacher to child ratio so that all of the children are well supported in the session.
