About this Event

The innovative nationwide movement Mothers Who Make continues at The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry this Autumn.

Are you a passionate maker or artist and a mother? Do you want to develop your practice and connect with other mother makers? Would you like to meet in a welcoming, inclusive and supportive space to discuss the opportunities for growth and the challenges these dual roles present? We invite you to explore your practice within a peer support framework and consider and discuss how you balance these two vital roles.

At October’s hub meeting in partnership with Coventry Biennial of Contemporary Art we welcome Scottish artist Jacqueline Donachie to deliver a workshop. Ahead of this, for the September hub theme we invite you to think about the wide-ranging creative skills which develop whilst mothering, partly inspired by this interview with Donachie:

“I really value the contacts and experiences I have made through alternative networks—disability forums, school and nursery-gate friends (two of whom proofed my PhD thesis for me, one of whom is currently advising me on the legal profession in Scotland). I learned more about people management, planning regulations and governance on the PTA of my kid’s school when they tried to close it than I ever did at art school. We took on the council and won. Those skills and connections stay with you.”

Skills such as these as well as empathy, patience, fairness, time management, playfulness, humour, have a tendency to grow instinctively through parenting, and these vital skills can bring so much to other areas of our lives. We encourage you to come and share your experiences of how what you’ve learnt through motherhood has shaped your creative path.

Every kind of maker is welcome - professional and/or passionate – in any discipline and at any stage on their creative paths - writers, visual artists, performers, film makers, dancers, producers, musicians, crafters…

Every kind of mother is welcome - biological, adoptive, step, surrogate, foster, bereaved, grand, great grand, to be ….

Mothers Who Make is not a child centred play session or an adult only event but a third way - an adult centred group which welcomes children. Children of any age are encouraged to attend and are integrated into the meeting, for the dual roles of mother and artist are recognised and given equal value within all MWM events. Toys are provided.

Booking is free but we ask for £5 / £3 or pay what you can afford contribution on the door.

This hub has been co-ordinated by Jessica Timmis - Artist and Adele Mary Reed.

Adele is a photographer and mother based in Coventry. Her daughter was born in September 2017. She has recently exhibited her photographs in London as part of The RPS 100 Heroines curated show ‘Unframing Identities’ as well as at The Herbert Art Gallery and Class Room Gallery in Coventry. She has also exhibited moving image works at Coventry Cathedral, The Tin Music & Arts, Truman Brewery and the Mockingbird Theatre.

You can find out more about her work here.

Jessica: "I’m Jess Timmis. I am an Artist and an Art psychotherapist and I also like to write sometimes. I have two lovely children - a boy aged 15 and a girl aged 2 and I am a single parent.

I was drawn to set up the hub with Adele because I want to increase creative support for women negotiating the artistic challenges of motherhood. I want to help provide a place to play and think together. I would like to foster a community that creatively articulates the often invisible and unacknowledged work of caregiving. I’ve been looking for a space to nourish me for ages so I thought I’d better help make one."
