An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing (MI)

    About this event

The course is designed for healthcare professionals (e.g., Nurses, social prescribers and other healthcare workers) who have the opportunity to deliver brief ‘behaviour change’ interventions with patients. These are conversations that focus on a specific behaviour that can improve the person’s health and wellbeing. The training is suitable for participants who have not undergone any previous Motivational Interviewing (MI) training and for those who are simply looking for a refresher.

    What will be covered?

Each session runs for 3 hours and cover the following elements:

    • Understanding behaviour change – sharing participants’ experiences from their practice and introduction to behaviour change theory
    • Spirit and principles of the motivational approach – the essence of the approach and reflecting to what extent this is evident in participants’ practice
    • Model framework and simulation – the basic framework for a motivational conversation and a video simulation featuring an experienced MI practitioner
    • Core skills – how to spot, encourage and respond when the client is interested in changing a problem behaviour
    • Putting skills into practice - participants break-out into separate virtual rooms to role play scenarios, returning to share their experience and learnings.

This virtual 3 hour session will be hosted on Microsoft Teams. Participants will receive joining details prior to their booked session.
