What is motivational interviewing?
Motivational interviewing is a directive, client-centred counselling style that aims to help people explore and resolve their ambivalence about behaviour change. It combines a focus on both relational (warmth and empathy) and technical skills (e.g. reinforcing the client's language about change). Motivation to change is enhanced by eliciting reasons from people, rather than attempting to persuade them by instilling motivation. MI is especially focussed on reducing discord in relationships and instead develops collaborative relationships where client and worker both engage in examining the possibilities of change together.
MI is one of the best researched behaviour-change interventions with over 200 randomised controlled trials addressing a wide range of health behaviours from substance use through to improving parenting skills. The U.K. National Institute of Clinical Excellence have recommended it as a behavioural intervention for a number of populations, including drug using adolescents, gay men at risk of HIV and for all people that misuse alcohol. Because of its focus on reducing discord, MI appears especially effective for populations of people expressing anger in consultations.
The evidence on training suggests developing competency in motivational interviewing requires at least 2 days of training followed by feedback on practise in supervision (Miller et al., 2004). Advanced MI skills can take around 200 hours of supervised practice (Tober and Raistrick, 2007). Many formats of training are available. The 3-day programme is just one option that tries to respond to the evidence by combining elements of training in skills and feedback on practice.
Day 1 – Building on core skills: This first day will initially focus on developing the core skills of motivational interviewing and engaging difficult to engage service users. The training will ground the training in your work context and build on your current effective practice. This will be helpful to both people already practiced in MI and those new to this interviewing style.
Day 2 – Building motivation for change: The second day will support people to use their core skills in a strategic manner to help people establish a focus in sessions, elicit talk about the possibility of change and help service users make effective plans for change. Participants will gain direct experience of delivering and receiving MI. This day will also help you to consider how MI can be usefully integrated into your current working settings and how you might practice before the third day.
Day 3 – Follow-up group: This day will occur about a fortnight after the initial core training days. It will focus on providing supervision to participants on their own MI practice, but also to support them in thinking about how to maintain gains from training over the long term. The aim of this day is to ensure that the gains made by all participants during the training are maintained following the end of the course.

• Have an understanding and be able to demonstrate the ‘Spirit’ of MI and its four stages
• Have practiced the core skills of motivational interviewing
• Have an understanding of where motivational interviewing fits into your daily practise.
• Be able to elicit talk about change and reduce the likelihood of clients talking about maintaining unhealthy patterns of behaviour.
• Be able to recognise and respond to discord in your relationship with clients.
• Video and audio presentation of real life case material
• Handouts and relevant reading materials.
• Reference to current evidence-base.
• Carefully planned role-plays, real-plays and small group exercises to aid skill development with personalized feedback
• Tasks will be established following the 2 day teaching to provide participants with a focus to practice newly learned skills prior to the half day supervision.
