About this event

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a key tool in making behaviour change interventions effective.

As MI can be slightly counter-intuitive, your approach needs to be carefully considered so that the conversations you have don’t accidentally make change less likely.

This one day introduction will explore the theory behind MI so that participants understand why and how it works, and then will look at the key skills needed in order to start using this approach.

Motivational Interviewing has been defined as “a client-centred, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change, by exploring and resolving ambivalence” (Miller and Rollnick 2002)

The day will cover:

  • How we change;
  • Ambivalence;
  • What helps and what doesn’t help;
  • MI theory;
  • Simple techniques to follow to start using MI.

The day will utilise:

  • Presentation of theory and evidence-base;
  • Interactive exercises;
  • Case examples;
  • Handouts and material for further study.

The trainer will be Jez Bayes, the Cornwall DAAT Alcohol Strategy Co-ordinator.

He has held this position since 2008, prior to which he worked in the criminal justice system, helping people address underlying drug and alcohol issues. Jez is based in the team that commissions the drug and alcohol services and systems of prevention, treatment and control. As such, he works with partners across Public Health, Community Safety, Licensing, NHS, CJS and other community services.

His role entails looking at the evidence of alcohol’s impact in Cornwall, developing a strategy to address this, and then supporting and initiating alcohol preventative, educational, harm reduction and treatment intervention projects in local partnerships.

This course applies to any practitioner dealing with any behaviour change.

Refreshments will be available but please bring your own lunch.
