Motor Re-patterning, Structural and Behavioural Change

Structural Integration as Skills of Perception and Coordination

A Three-Day Course, London, UK

With Kevin Frank

Hosted by Rolfing UK

For body workers, dance, movement, therapeutic and health practitioners

In this workshop, we will move mind and body to foster discoveries: discoveries in how your body can best rebirth its motor patterns, toward greater ease, fluidity and effectiveness.

Moving together we will engender a resonant field that supports well-being and self-regulation. We will learn how to help our clients and students discover the same.

An important motif of this workshop will be learning more about how we learn. Movement teaching necessitates sustained curiosity about our learning styles, and opportunities presented by our clients and students. We will enter a shared inquiry.

The workshop will introduce changes in movement re-patterning through working with our gravity response--a basis for plasticity in patterning. Gravity response is a key means with which to communicate with the movement brain and elicit its cooperation.

We will be informed by Tonic Function Theory, the somatic model introduced by Rolfer Hubert Godard, that builds on gravity orientation skills as the basis for learning to meet challenge, while simultaneously provoking the body to lengthen and quiet effort.

We will also be informed by Ida Rolf's work, the founder of Rolfing® Structural Integration. She stated that 'structure is behavior'. What she meant is that long standing patterns of body behavior are also patterns of movement and posture. When the body’s movement system is better informed through changed perception, long standing motor patterns are more able to shift and so is behavior. And our movement adapts without having to think about it.

Dan Siegel, the neuroscience pioneer, suggests: 'Integration is the linking up of differentiated parts of a system.' Frank will also point to this statement as an appropriate description and basis for what happens in the field of structural integration: we endeavor to differentiate the body’s maps of itself through touch and perceptual means. When sensory and motor maps (in the brain) are differentiated, we assist people to link these updated maps in new ways, through movement explorations, as a group or individually. In this manner, we learn to change the way the body prepares to move. This improves movement adaptability, the capacity to meet challenges in daily life.

About Kevin Frank

Kevin Frank has studied, written about, and taught the Tonic Function approach to structural integration since 1991. He is a Certified Advanced Rolfer and Rolf Movement Instructor for the

Rolf Institute. Kevin advocates for an information-based model for how and why structure changes to bring our field more fully into alignment with modern science.
