Description

Explore the Mount Dinham area of Exeter located on the hill just beyond the Iron Bridge.

The day includes guided tours of the Mount Dinham Almshouses estate and St Michael's Church, both built in the 1860's a legacy of two of Exeter's well known Victorian philanthropists, John Dinham and William Gibbs of Tyntesfield.

The 44 Almshouses, set in a quiet green, are currently being restored. Rick Williams, the Chief Executive of Cornerstone Housing, will talk about the history of Mount Dinham and show us the painstaking work being undertaken to modernise the Almshouses, whilst maintaining their Grade 2 listed status.

At St Michael's Church historian Richard Parker will give us a guided tour of this Victorian High Gothic Tractarian church. Said to have the tallest spire west of Salisbury and including some fine furnishings, it is also known locally for the peregrine falcons which annually nest in the spire.

Coffee and lunch is included and will be provided by the Mulberry Cafe in the Exeter Community Centre on St David's Hill.

The almshouse estate is a building site with a certain amount of noise and dirt, therefore not suitable for anyone with resticted mobility. Visitors will be asked to wear hard hats and high viz. jackets.

When booking, if the event is fully booked do please leave your details so that we may contact you should a place become available.

Organised by

Art Fund Devon Fundraising Committee is a team of volunteers who historically organised a six monthly programme of events to raise money for Art Fund, the national fundraising charity for art. Following a decision by the trustees of Art Fund all Fundraising Committees will be disbanded 31st December 2019. However, as Devon Fundraising Committee had planned an event for March 2020 this event will continue but will be the final event for the Devon Fundraising Committee.

Art Fund helps museums and galleries acquire works of art for their collections. It also helps museums share their collections with wider audiences by supporting a range of tours and exhibitions, and makes additional grants to support the training and professional development of curators. Art Fund is independently funded, with the core of its income provided by 122,000 members who receive the National Art Pass and enjoy free entry to over 240 museums, galleries and historic places across the UK, as well as 50% off entry to major exhibitions. www.artfund.org
