Mount Kilimanjaro Climb
Thu, 7 Sep 2017, 15:00 – Sat, 16 Sep 2017, 18:00 BST
If you enjoy the hillwalking events in the UK at weekends, then your big goal should be one of the classic overseas treks, and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania - the highest mountain in Africa - features high on everyone's bucket list. We summit Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route as it sees little human traffic, managing to retain a sense of untouched wilderness and our seven day trek allows plenty of time for acclimatisation and side trips.
The beautiful and challenging Lemosho Route approaches the mountain from the west and ascends through lush, fertile rainforest, before climbing up onto the moorlands of the Shira Plateau where giant plants unique to Kilimanjaro pepper the landscape. From the Shira Plateau we pass the great lava tower and traverse below the southern flank of the Kibo glacier before reaching the crater rim at Stella Point and making our final push for the summit.
The final ascent is an exhilarating climb up the steep lava scree made in darkness by headtorch and moonlight - your reward is a spectacular dawn panorama of the glaciers and ice cliffs of the summit illuminated by the rising sun, and across the East African plains far below.
