Event description

Description

Purpose

To explore the route from Dolgellau to Barmouth Bridge over the Cader Massif. This is the first leg of Ultra Trail Wales 2018.

Description

We will meet in Morfa Mawddach, and transport you back to Dolgellau for the start of the recce. This gives you the chance to arrive by train, or by car, and arrive back to your transport after the run. It you are staying in Dolgellau we are happy to arrange transport back to Dolgellau at the end of the day.

During the recce we will be focussing on hill skills as well as the route, so if you’ve been on a navigation course with us previously we are happy to cover practical elements of that too. We are running a navigation course at Run Coed y Brenin http://www.runcoedybrenin.com/trail-school/courses-seminars/ on the day before this recce.

The route itself climbs from the centre of Dolgellau on steep tarmac, before spending the rest of the day on the high mountain terrain. Amazing views North in to Snowdonia, and South to Plynlimon and the Dyfi are not guaranteed, but if they are there, it’s an amazing addition to a great journey. At the end of the day we drop down back to the Mawddach estuary, right at the amazing wooden bridge that takes you to Barmouth and the second leg of UTW!

It is not intended to be a ‘running’ day. We will move quickly, faster than walking, but to get the best from the recce, it shouldn’t be thought of as a run. No-one will be left behind.

What level is this?

This route is approximately 25km, with 1100m of ascent. We are anticipating that the recce will take approximately 6 hrs. You should be confident that you can spend a day in the mountains and are prepared for any weather.

  • Snacks that will keep you fuelled for the day
  • At least 500ml of water
