Event description

Description

Purpose

To explore the route from Barmouth to Coed y Brenin, including the descent from Diffwys. This is the second leg of Ultra Trail Wales 2018

Description

We will meet in Coed y Brenin, and transport you to the start in Morfa Mawddach. This means that at the end of the run you will arrive back to your transport. Please note that there is a car parking charge payable in Coed y Brenin.

During the run we will be focussing on hill skills as well as the route, so if you’ve been on a navigation course with us previously we are happy to cover practical elements of that too.

The route crosses the beautiful listed wooden bridge to Barmouth. We then climb on a short piece of tarmac onto the ridge of the Rhinogydd. From here we climb to the highest point, Diffwys. A technical descent will lead us through an old Manganese mine before heading across the Gamlan river catchment and down on forest trails to Coed y Brenin.

It is not intended to be a ‘running’ day. We will move quickly, faster than walking, but to get the best from the recce, it is not a run. No-one will be left behind.

What level is this?

This route is approximately 25km, with 1000m of ascent. We are anticipating that the recce will take approximately 6 hrs. You should be confident that you can spend a day in the mountains and are prepared for any weather.

Required equipment

  • Clothing for a full day on the hills – this should be warm, and be full water proof body cover
  • Footwear suitable for the mountain environment (min 5mm tread)
  • Weatherproof map (Harvey’s or OS 1:25k) of the area
  • Snacks that will keep you fuelled for the day
  • At least 500ml of water
