If you want to learn the art of navigation using a map and compass, this practical and hands on 1 day course is perfect for complete beginners or those whose skills may be out of date and need a refresher.

As a qualified and experienced Mountain Leader, I'll show you the fundamentals of map reading as we go on a journey through the Peak District. Things we'll look at will include:

• Scales, features & conventional signs
• Locating points on the map using grid references
• Taking bearings from the map for use on the ground
• Taking bearings from the ground for use on the map
• Handrailing & collecting features
• Using route cards

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

You do not need any navigation experience for this course and I will provide any navigation equipment you will need. However I recommend you have a reasonable level of fitness and be sure to read the information I send beforehand so you know what to expect and what to bring. We will be out walking for the day so warm, waterproof clothing is essential as is enough food and drink.

You must be over 18 for this course. Under 18s may be accommodated but only if they are accompanied by a parent / guardian. To fulfill insurance and safety requirements all participants must complete an online declaration form, found here.
