About this event

A session in the Peak District with a qualified Mountain Leader to learn basic map work or develop your skills.

This event is for you to hire me as your instructor so you can spend time mastering the art of map reading and navigation. You might be new to map reading or you may be looking to refresh or develop your skills. Whatever your aims, as a fully qualified Mountain Leader I can help you achieve them.

This session is designed on a personal, one2one basis so I work with a maximum of two people. The price quoted is inclusive for up to 2 people. The date and time is arranged to suit so please ignore the date quoted as we will arrange a mutually convenient date. Sessions run for up to half a day for a morning or afternoon. Evenings sessions can also be arranged to allow for a focus on night / low visibility navigation.

    Who's this session for?

Whether you are completely new to navigation in the mountains or have developed the basic sklls and want to progress further, this day is suitable for any ability level.

This personal session is just that and we'll focus on your goals to develop your skills. If you have a specific area of focus that you want to improve then great - if, however, you aren't sure and want to generally improve your all round knowledge then I can help with a range of improvement options depending on how much experience you have.

There are a lot of skills and techniques in mountain navigation. Some of the areas of focus we could cover on a one to one basis include:

    Introductory Elements

Types of maps, scales, map symbols, grid refs & orientation

    Intermediate & Advanced Elements

Contours, relief interpreting the map, compass work, bearings and finding your location

    Navigational Strategies

Timing, pacing, aiming off, attack points and countouring

    Electronics

    GPS, apps and online mapping

    What do I need?

You just need to bring yourself and suitable clothing and footwear for the outdoors as well as food and drink. If you have any navigational aids, you can bring them along.

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION

You do not need any navigation experience for this course and I will provide any navigation equipment you will need. However I recommend you have a reasonable level of fitness and be sure to read the information I send beforehand so you know what to expect and what to bring. We will be out walking for the day so warm, waterproof clothing is essential as is enough food and drink.

You must be over 18 for this course. Under 18s may be accommodated but only if they are accompanied by a parent / guardian. To fulfill insurance and safety requirements all participants must complete an online declaration form, found here.

Please read the full terms and conditions of booking before you book.

    About me
