Event description

Description

At the heart of our 40 years of success is our desire to explore and innovate. Our R&I programme provides Steer consultants with resources to develop new ideas, products and services. In this year’s R&I project showcase, we feature case studies that include ‘The implications of a cashless society’ and ‘The future of urban mobility’, among other exciting innovations.

Our consultants will showcase on the following topics:

Who’s Driving? A Manifesto for City Centres in the Age of the Driverless Car, Riccardo Bobisse

Steer's provocative manifesto on CAVs and urban design. The manifesto speculates about how imminent changes in urban mobility and technology will affect the urban form and public realm in the next 20 years and proposes ways in which cities could prepare for them.

Understanding the impacts of Timetable Design and Autumnal Effects in Rail Performance and Forecasting, Ben Whitlock

Can we forecast how rail performance is impacted by timetable design and autumnal effects? Using analysis of train lateness between Huddersfield and Stalybridge as a case study, we will show how Steer is developing a toolkit for estimating the performance impacts of future timetables.

Urban Dynamic Model, an Online Tool for Everyone, John Swanson

The UDM is a well-established tool that has been in use at Steer for many years. This project developed a fully-functional online version that can be accessed by anyone, and is intended for use in smaller, low-cost applications.

The Implications of a Cashless Society, Andrew Montgomery & Matthew Jones

One of the projects carried out at our most recent Hackday. The team looked at the wider consequences of an increasingly cashless society and considered what the implications might be for our clients in the transport sector.

Exploring the Effects of Long-Term Trends on Travel Demand, Tony Duckenfield

How will long term trend changes in travel behaviour and attitudes alter the demand for travel in future years? This project looked at the existing evidence, carried out an online Delphi data collection exercise, and developed a system model to try to answer this complex question.

Mapping Future Potential PPP Opportunities in Mexico, Lucia Ferreira

Steer’s office in Mexico City does a lot of work for promoters of PPP transport infrastructure projects. In this project, the team carried out a national audit of the country’s transport infrastructure network, cross-referencing it with the objectives of the National Infrastructure Plan, in order to highlight potential future projects. The resulting database was linked to an interactive GIS, allowing potential opportunities to be plotted.

Please note, tickets are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis and places are limited.
