The next stage of Moving Hearts - MARCH 24 & 25 - Moving Hearts exhibition and related events

At the Migration Museum at the Workshop, 26 Lambeth High Street, London SE1 7AG

During March 2018, more than three hundred Londoners from all backgrounds have come together in workshops to make 1000 small human hearts in clay. As they made the hearts, they shared their thoughts and feelings on migration and belonging. The stories they shared helped to shape the hearts they made.

About the installation: On Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th March at the Migration Museum at the Workshop, Lambeth, the thousand hearts will be wrapped in white cloth and laid out in a spiral. Audiences are invited to walk the spiral, pick up a heart to unwrap it and, if they want, write on the cloth something expressing their own connection to those forced to migrate. The installation will also include a tent made of messages written by Australians voicing their own connection to people seeking asylum. Opening hours: 11-5 pm on March 24 & 25

Saturday March 24 Events

Procession (10-11.30 am)

Take part in a procession of the hearts at 10 am (Riverside Terrace: access via Waterloo Bridge, King's College London WC2R 2LS – Temple or Embankment Tubes), where they will be walked to the Migration Museum at the Workshop, Lambeth (SE1 7AG, Vauxhall or Waterloo Tubes). Register now to join the procession!

Talking Hearts Forum (2-4 pm)

Walk the Moving Hearts installation and then join in Talking Hearts. This is an open forum for people to share thoughts, questions, feelings, experiences, ideas, stories, and work related to migration and belonging. Talking Hearts will also include several very short invited talks. Through Talking Hearts, you will grow new connections to re-imagine and create an open world where all belong.

Upstairs from the Moving Hearts Installation, the Migration Museum’s No Turning Back, Seven Migration Moments That Changed Britain will be open from 11-5 pm. Museum staff will give free tours of the exhibition at 3pm and 4pm. Places are limited to 15 per tour and you can sign up at the Museum on the day.

Sunday March 25 Events

The installation will be open 11am-5pm.

From 3-5 pm the hearts displayed will be offered for audiences to take home with them. A donation of 5 pounds for each heart is asked, with proceeds going to the Migration Museum Project at the Workshop.

Upstairs from the Moving Hearts Installation, the Migration Museum’s No Turning Back, Seven Migration Moments That Changed Britain will be open from 11-5 pm. Museum staff will give free tours of the exhibition at 1:30pm and 3:30pm. Places are limited to 15 per tour and you can sign up at the Museum on the day.

About Moving Hearts

Moving Hearts is a collaboration between Australian artist Penny Ryan and Professor Anna Reading and Dr James Bjork from King's College London. Moving Hearts builds on Penny's Connecting Hearts Project, which has involved 1000s of people in Sydney reflecting on their connection with people seeking asylum, particularly those in detention.

Moving Hearts links King's College London with the Migration Museum at the Workshop and their current exhibition - No Turning Back, Seven Migration Moments That Changed Britain. Clay Time is supporting Moving Hearts by providing clay and firing the hearts.

Moving Hearts is funded through an international social justice grant from the PLuS Alliance. This project has ethics approval from King's College London- MR/17/18-207
