Moving On - Creative Writing Course
Tue, 8 Nov 2016, 18:00 – Tue, 13 Dec 2016, 20:00 GMT
If you’ve attended Write Norfolk's Starting to Write course or you already write fiction but do not feel ready to tackle that dream writing project yet, then this is the course for you.
During our six-week Moving On course we aim to motivate writers, as well as offer the chance to improve technical skills, develop good writing habits and encourage writers to help them achieve their goals.
So if you’re ready to take the next step with your craft then we want to be right there with you, supporting you every step of the way. No dream is too small and whether you’re writing for pleasure or you have bigger ambitions then we want to hear from you. Why not start your story here?
Course: Moving On
Duration: 12 hours over 6 weeks
When: Tuesdays at 6pm – 8pm
Tutor: Donna-Louise Bishop
About the group
This is a group catering for those who have previously completed our Starting to Write course or people with experience of creative writing who wish to extend their skills and take their writing to the next level. All students will be new to the group and, it is hoped, will enjoy and benefit from the interaction with other writers as well as the support offered.
About the course
This is a six-week course (approximately two hours per session) with the option of signing-up to further courses, subject to demand, sufficient student numbers and venue availability.
The course will focus on developing characters, building a narrative, improving dialogue and voice, descriptive writing, and handling point of view and time in fiction. There is also the possibility for the content of the course to be adapted according to student needs and experience.
Some of the key topics which will be covered include:
Knowing your genre
- Developing the narrator
- Voice – dialogue and narrative
- Creating three dimensional characters
- How to show, not tell
- Descriptive writing
- Setting the scene
- Next steps and getting published
The sessions are taught through a variety of different techniques including group participation and discussion, writing exercises, workshopping, and some tutor-led learning. There will also be an opportunity to share some of the writing completed during the sessions, with the group.
The aim of the course is to have a solid idea for a larger piece of work, with the aim of writing around 10,000 words, or at least one completed short story. This goal is flexible and participants will be encouraged to share their own goals with the tutor.
Celebrating Student Achievement
After the course, participants will be issued with a certificate to confirm their attendance and participation of the course. On completion, participants will also have the option to be added to an online writing group where they can share their work with Write Norfolk’s supportive writing community.
