‘MR HANDEL INVITES’: Music for Recorders and Harpsichord
Thomas Allery, harpsichord
Mary Jannet-Leith, recorder
Thomas Allery (Assistant Director of Music at St Marylebone) and Mary Jannet-Leith are both Masters graduates of the Historical Performance department of the Royal College of Music.
As Ensemble Hesperi, their programme will explore the music surrounding Handel’s arrival London in 1710, including famous sonatas by Telemann and Handel himself, as well as more unusual yet sparkling works by other composers popular in London in the early eighteenth century, such as Pepusch, Geminiani, Dieupart, and the celebrated Sammartini brothers. Many of these now lesser-known continental composers played a key role in establishing musical societies and historic concert series in London - many of which, such as the Academy of Ancient Music, still exist today
