Event description

Description

This is a time-travelling guided walk taking us back to a time when Holloway was a highly respectable neighbourhood – an area for the upwardly mobile, as perfectly parodied by the character of Mr Pooter in A Diary of a Nobody.

Let’s go back to a time when our high streets looked beautiful. To a time when shops had curved windows, polished brass, hand-painted signage, immaculate window displays and staff in white aprons. Imagine too, palatial variety theatres, gin palaces, tea rooms, banqueting halls and the early labyrinthine department stores. Specifically, let’s go back to a time when the Nag’s Head area of Holloway was affectionately known as “The Oxford Street Of The North”.

Perhaps you live in Holloway and think it’s convenient for travelling to work. Perhaps you live elsewhere and think N7 is just somewhere you drive through on the way to another place. Well, stop a minute and consider those connections, because in the late Victorian to Edwardian period those same transport networks enabled the area to sparkle as a rival to the West End.

On this 90-minute walk you will find out how the Nag's Head area of Holloway Road evolved from a wide muddy lane flanked by farms and pasture land into a go-to shopping district with top-end entertainment.

This part of the A1 boasts many firsts in transport and shopping. You will learn how one store was described as “The Fortnum & Mason of North London” and another was bigger and better than its Oxford Street counterparts.

Today's Holloway may not be as visually impressive as it was 125 years ago but it’s still got a plenty to offer – hints of the historical gems are hiding in plain view just waiting to be appreciated.

Don’t just pass through – come and see the district in a different light.
