Approaching Difficulty; Compassionate Inquiry (MRE Level 2 workshop, also open to mindfulness teachers from other training pathways)

This master class explores creating the safe learning environment within which mindfulness course participants can begin to turn toward difficulty with self-compassion and with growing self-confidence.

Intrinsic to this is the inquiry process and the master class develops the capacity of the mindfulness teacher to meet moments of intensity in inquiry with openness, resilience and compassion. The training includes safe, simple and incremental mindfulness and compassion practices that can be offered to participants to help cultivate their capacity to approach and become more open to moments of difficulty.

Dan Siegel's Window of Tolerance model offers a helpful framework for helping clients work effectively with difficulty between the extremes of hyper- and hypo-arousal. We explore using this model in the context of mindfulness teaching and inquiry. This is complemented by the growing understanding of the neurophysiological processes that can be triggered by mindfulness practiced poorly matched to a participants needs. Inappropriate triggering of dissociation, panic, rage or shame reactions can be very undermining of an individual's confidence in their capacity to self-soothe.

MRE is intrinsically a trauma sensitive form of mindfulness but, even so, it is important to ensure that the learning environment and the learning experiences we offer are made safe by adapting to need.

New to MRE but are a mindfulness teacher?

This workshop is open to anyone who has completed a recognised mindfulness teacher training programme (e.g. MBSR, MBCT, Breathworks, .bF). You will need to provide evidence of having completed this training as part of the booking process. For mindfulness teachers who have not attended MRE training workshops or a MRE course there will be mindfulness practices and reading provided prior to the workshop so you have the necessary familiarity with the philosophy underpinning MRE. In addition, only attendance certificates will be available to those who have not completed the MRE level 1 competency certification process (although should this be completed you can then count this workshop as part of the Level 2 competency certification process).

Level 2 MRE Training

This workshop is one of the 3 free-standing master classes that comprise Level 2 training. The level 2 workshops can be done in any order. The level 2 workshops are open to anyone who has attended all three Level 1 workshops even if you have not completed the Level 1 competency certification process (though you cannot meet the criteria for the Level 2 competency certificate until the Level 1 competency certification process has been completed.)

Linked Workshops

This workshop is one of the 3 Level 2 masterclass workshops that are all free-standing, can be attended in any sequence and are open to all established mindfulness teachers as well as MRE teachers. We plan to run each of these masterclass workshops at least once a year.

The three workshops are:

  • Cultivating Self-Compassion with Gentleness - Weekend Date TBA Spring 2018 @ Luther King House
  • Teaching the Body Scan Practice Skilfully, Accessibly & Compassionately - Weekend Date TBA Autumn 2018 @ The Christie
  • Approaching Difficulty; Compassionate Inquiry - Dec 2nd & 3rd 2017 @ Luther King House and Autumn 2018, Weekend Date TBA @ Luther King House)

Please see the specific event description for each workshop for more details when they are announced.
